Sunnymont parents come to nursery school with their children one day each week to work along side the teacher as teacher’s aides. While some parents have worked in classrooms before, for many it is a new experience. Don’t worry- Our teachers and veteran parents will help you learn the ropes and feel confident in the classroom.

Our children benefit from the rich variety of activities, experiences and loving adults we can provide when we all pitch in. They learn to know and respect many adult friends as well as their children.

Our parents benefit from the chance to learn from the teacher and other parents about children’s development and learning, and about their unique child in particular.  Parents know what their children do at school, and form deep friendships with other families. Sunnymont becomes the small community in the midst of the big city for many of us.

Our teachers enjoy the chance to reach beyond each child’s time at Sunnymont by providing support that families can take into the future with them. This learning is enhanced by evening classes each month where parents learn more about parenting and education from our teachers, community experts, and each other.

How it works:

Each family selects a day of the week, and each week you will work in your child's class on that day. The other day(s), you drop your child off in the capable hands of the other parents and teacher. In the 1-day class you will remain with your child and supervise your child's activities. In the 2,3,4-day classes you will be assigned an area of the classroom or yard to supervise. The teacher moves about the classroom, and other parents are nearby you also. The teachers will offer recommendations for handling different situations, and step in when you want help. Each workday, you will have a job card to guide you through the day. Each card is detailed so you'll know when you need to be supervising, cleaning or what ever your particular job is. In addition to supporting the children’s play and exploration

All job cards, like the example below, will include some form of cleaning and some will include supervising, bringing and serving a healthy snack (Water is our preferred, non-sticky, easy to clean beverage.), a special project, or observing and making log of a child's activities .All of classes will have parents that are both new comers as well as veteran parents that have been at Sunnymont for a while, so you're never alone.
